Buying speakers & sound cards at HodlChip

Better sound starts with what your desk and setup allow:

  • Desktop speakers: compact 2.0 speakers powered by USB suit small desks; larger sets with their own power supply give more volume and bass.
  • PC soundbars: one slim unit under the monitor, often with Bluetooth, and on some models HDMI or optical inputs for a console or TV.
  • Sound cards: an internal PCIe card or an external USB sound card can give cleaner output than a noisy onboard chip, a stronger headphone amplifier and virtual surround. External units also work with laptops and some consoles.
  • DACs and adapters: USB DACs and compact adapters add a good 3.5 mm output to PCs and laptops without one.

Check the connection you have: USB, 3.5 mm, optical, Bluetooth or a free PCIe x1 slot. High-impedance headphones, from about 250 ohms, benefit from a dedicated amplifier. Place speakers at ear height and a little away from the wall for clearer bass. A headset stand keeps the desk tidy. Questions about speakers & sound cards

Do I need a sound card?
Not for most users: modern onboard audio is good enough for games and everyday listening. A sound card or USB DAC helps when onboard output is noisy, when you drive high-impedance headphones, or when you want features such as virtual surround.
Internal or external sound card?
Internal PCIe cards stay out of sight and need a free slot. External USB sound cards and DACs sit on the desk with easy volume control, and they also work with laptops and some consoles.
Can I connect a PC soundbar to a TV or console?
If it has an HDMI, optical or Bluetooth input, yes; USB-only soundbars work with PCs and some consoles. Check the inputs listed on the product page.
