Buying software at HodlChip

A new PC needs an operating system, and the license type decides how you can use it:

  • OEM and system builder licenses are meant for a new PC. They stay with the computer they are first activated on and cannot move to another one later.
  • Retail licenses, such as a product key card, can usually be moved to a new computer once removed from the old one; the license terms on the product page apply.
  • Windows 11 Home or Pro: Home covers gaming and everyday use. Pro adds BitLocker drive encryption, hosting Remote Desktop sessions, Hyper-V virtual machines and Group Policy, which suit work machines and home labs.
  • Office 2024: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as a one-time purchase rather than a subscription.

Windows 11 needs a supported 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot, which current AMD and Intel platforms provide through firmware TPM. Install it from a USB stick made with Microsoft's media creation tool, then enter your key. Check the edition, license type and language listed on each product page before ordering. Pick the hardware in the PC Builder, and add a USB flash drive for the installer.

Questions about software

What is the difference between an OEM and a retail license?
An OEM (system builder) license is intended for a new PC and stays with the computer it is first activated on. A retail license can be moved to another computer after it is removed from the old one. Both give you the same features for the same edition.
Do I need Windows 11 Pro?
Not for gaming or everyday use, where Home covers everything. Choose Pro for BitLocker drive encryption, hosting Remote Desktop sessions, Hyper-V virtual machines or joining a company domain.
Will Windows 11 run on my PC?
It needs a supported 64-bit processor, 4 GB of memory, 64 GB of storage, TPM 2.0 and UEFI with Secure Boot. Current AMD Ryzen and Intel Core platforms meet these requirements; if the setup reports a missing TPM, enable firmware TPM in the BIOS.
