Buying switches & kvm at HodlChip

A network switch adds wired ports to your network; a KVM switch shares one desk between two computers.

  • Unmanaged Gigabit switches: plug them in and they work, with no setup. A 5-port model suits a TV corner or a desk; an 8-port model leaves room for a PC, console, TV and NAS.
  • Fanless desktop design: these switches run silently, which suits living rooms, bedrooms and offices.
  • KVM switches: connect two PCs to one monitor, keyboard and mouse, and switch between them with a button. Check the video connection, the maximum resolution and refresh rate, and whether audio passes through.

Count your wired devices and add a spare port or two. One port connects to your router, so a 5-port switch leaves four ports for devices. Gigabit is plenty for most homes; faster multi-gig switches only help when the devices on both ends, or your internet plan, exceed 1 Gb/s. Use Cat5e or better patch cables. For faster network cards and USB Ethernet adapters, see network cards & adapters, and for the router itself, see routers.

Questions about switches & kvm

Do I need a managed switch?
Not for a typical home: an unmanaged switch simply adds ports. Managed switches add VLANs, link aggregation and traffic monitoring, which suit home labs and offices with more complex networks.
Will a Gigabit switch slow down my internet?
Not for internet plans up to 1 Gb/s, the speed of each Gigabit port. With a faster plan, connect the computer that needs full speed directly to a multi-gig port on your router.
Does a KVM switch work with gaming monitors?
It passes the video signal up to its rated resolution and refresh rate, so compare those figures with your monitor and graphics card. For very high refresh rates, the monitor's own input switching may work better.
