Buying server & rack cases at HodlChip

A rackmount case turns standard PC parts into a server that fits a 19-inch rack. Choose the height first:

  • 1U and 2U: compact, but they need low-profile coolers and expansion cards, and their small fans run louder. Many 2U cases take Micro-ATX boards.
  • 3U and 4U: room for ATX and E-ATX boards, full-height cards and taller coolers within the case's height limit, with quieter 80 or 120 mm fans.
  • 5U and 6U: the most space for drives, graphics cards and water cooling.

Then check the details. Depth: compare it with your rack, leaving room for cables at the back. Drive bays: fixed or hot-swap, 2.5- or 3.5-inch. Power supply: a standard ATX unit or a server power supply, as listed in the specifications. Rails: often sold separately; telescopic rails make maintenance easier than a fixed shelf.

Rack cases suit home labs, storage builds and render machines as well as business servers. Mounts and fan parts are in case parts & accessories, high-capacity drives in hard drives, and SATA and RAID controllers in expansion cards.

Questions about server & rack cases

Which rack height do I need?
Count your parts. 1U and 2U suit compact servers with low-profile coolers and cards; 4U takes ATX boards, full-height cards and taller coolers within the height limit. If quiet running matters, taller cases with larger fans are easier to cool.
Are rails included?
Not always: many rack cases are sold without rails, so check the product page. Match the rail length to your rack depth and the case's rail mounts, or use a fixed shelf for light cases.
Can I use a standard ATX power supply?
Most 3U to 6U cases and some 2U cases take a standard ATX unit; others need a slimmer or redundant server power supply. Check the power supply format in the specifications before ordering.
