Buying drive mounts & accessories at HodlChip

The parts that get a drive into the right place, or let you work with it outside the PC:

  • Bay adapters and cages: fit a 2.5-inch SSD in a 3.5-inch bay, several 2.5-inch drives in a 5.25-inch bay, or add drive cages where the case allows. Rubber washers and decoupled mounts reduce hard drive vibration noise.
  • Hot-swap bays: slide drives in and out from the front of the case, useful for backups and testing.
  • Docks and cloning stations: connect bare SATA or M.2 drives over USB. Clone models copy one drive to another at the push of a button, without a PC.
  • Adapters: USB-to-SATA cables for quick data recovery, caddies that replace a laptop's optical drive with an SSD, and PCIe cards that add an M.2 slot.

Check sizes before ordering: 2.5-inch drives are 7 or 9.5 mm thick, and M.2 docks list the drive lengths and types, NVMe or SATA, they accept. SATA docks need their power adapter for 3.5-inch drives. For finished external drives and enclosures, see drive enclosures & docks; for SATA and USB controller cards, see expansion & controller cards.

Questions about drive mounts & accessories

How large must the target drive be for cloning?
At least as large as the source drive; many offline clone docks copy the whole drive sector by sector, so a target of the same size or larger is safest. After cloning to a larger drive, extend the partition in your operating system to use the extra space.
Can I mount a 2.5-inch SSD in a 3.5-inch bay?
Yes, with a 2.5-to-3.5-inch adapter bracket. Many cases also have 2.5-inch mounts behind the motherboard tray, so check your case before buying one.
Will a dock read both SSDs and hard drives?
SATA docks read 2.5-inch SSDs and 2.5- or 3.5-inch hard drives, with the dock's power adapter for 3.5-inch drives. M.2 docks are separate and must support your drive type, NVMe or SATA.
