Buying wi-fi & bluetooth adapters at HodlChip

Two kinds of products here: adapters that connect a computer, and devices that extend your network.

  • USB Wi-Fi adapters: nothing to install inside the case, and easy to move between machines. Use a USB 3 port for Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 speeds.
  • PCIe cards and M.2 modules: PCIe cards with external antennas give a desktop stronger range, and most add Bluetooth through an internal USB header. M.2 modules replace a laptop's or motherboard's built-in card; Intel CNVi modules only work on boards that support CNVi.
  • Bluetooth adapters: USB sticks for PCs without Bluetooth, for controllers, headsets and keyboards.
  • Mesh systems, repeaters and powerline: mesh systems replace one router with several units that act as one network; repeaters extend an existing network; powerline adapters carry it over your home's electrical wiring.

Operating system support matters: full Wi-Fi 7 support needs Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and Linux support varies by chipset. To benefit from Wi-Fi 7 or 6E speeds you also need a router on the same standard, and 6 GHz must be permitted in your country. For wired connections, see network cards & adapters.

Questions about wi-fi & bluetooth adapters

PCIe or USB Wi-Fi adapter: which should I choose?
A PCIe card with external antennas usually gives stronger range and speed in a desktop, and often adds Bluetooth. A USB adapter is easier to install and move between computers, which suits laptops and temporary setups.
Does Wi-Fi 7 work on Windows 10?
Not fully. Wi-Fi 7 needs Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for full support, and many Wi-Fi 7 adapters have no Windows 10 driver at all. Check the manufacturer's support list before ordering.
Mesh system, repeater or powerline: which do I need?
A mesh system gives the most even coverage in larger homes, with units that act as one network. A repeater is a simple fix for one weak spot. Powerline adapters reach rooms that Wi-Fi cannot, but their speed depends on your wiring and is best on the same electrical circuit.
