Buying webcams at HodlChip

Pick a webcam by what you do with it:

  • Video calls: 1080p at 30 fps with autofocus is plenty for most meeting apps, which compress video anyway.
  • Streaming: 1080p at 60 fps gives smoother motion, and a larger sensor helps in the dim light many streamers use.
  • Content creation: 2K (1440p) and higher resolutions let you crop and reframe in editing, as long as the light is good.

Light makes the biggest difference. A soft light in front of you, such as a key light or a window, improves any webcam more than extra resolution. Avoid strong light behind you, which turns your face into a silhouette.

Other practical points: a field of view of around 65 to 90 degrees fits one person, while wider angles suit meeting rooms. A privacy shutter covers the lens when you are off camera. Check that the camera mounts on your monitor or a tripod thread, and that its software runs on your operating system. Pair it with a dedicated microphone for clearer sound, and see capture cards to bring in a camera or console.

Questions about webcams

Is a 4K webcam worth it for video calls?
Most calling apps send 1080p or less, so 4K adds little for calls alone. It helps for recording, cropping and high-quality streaming, provided you have good lighting.
Why does my webcam look grainy?
Usually because of low light: small sensors boost gain in dim conditions, which adds noise. Add a soft light in front of you and avoid bright windows behind you.
Does a webcam work on Mac and Linux?
Most USB webcams are standard UVC devices that work without drivers on Windows, macOS and Linux. Companion software for settings and effects may be available for Windows and macOS only.
