Buying blu-ray & dvd drives at HodlChip

Optical drives still earn their place for archiving, installing older software and games, and playing or copying your own discs. Choose the format first:

  • DVD burners read and write CDs and DVDs, the simplest way to read old discs and burn backups.
  • Blu-ray burners also write BD-R and BD-RE discs, and models that support BDXL write discs of 100 GB and more for long-term archives.
  • Blu-ray combo drives read Blu-ray discs and write CDs and DVDs.

External or internal: most current cases have no 5.25-inch bay, so a slim external USB drive is the practical choice, powered by the USB port. Internal SATA drives need a 5.25-inch bay, or a slim optical slot for slim models, plus a SATA data cable and power connector.

Playing Blu-ray movies needs player software that supports Blu-ray video, so check what comes with the drive. Store burned archive discs upright in a cool, dark place. For bootable installers, a USB flash drive is faster, and for everyday backups, see external drives.

Questions about blu-ray & dvd drives

Will an external DVD drive work with my laptop or Mac?
Most USB optical drives work as standard storage devices on Windows, macOS and Linux without drivers. Burning and video playback need suitable software, and a USB-C-only laptop needs an adapter if the drive has a USB-A plug.
Can I watch Blu-ray movies on my PC?
With a Blu-ray drive and player software that supports Blu-ray video, yes. Ultra HD Blu-ray movie playback on PCs depends on copy protection requirements that most current systems do not meet, so do not count on it.
Does my case have room for an internal drive?
Only if it has a 5.25-inch bay, which many current cases no longer include; slim internal drives need a slim optical slot. Otherwise choose an external USB drive.
