Buying monitor arms & mounts at HodlChip

A monitor arm frees desk space and lets you set the right height, depth and angle. Check these before buying:

  • VESA mount: most monitors use 75 × 75 or 100 × 100 mm holes on the back. Some curved, ultrawide and design-led models need an adapter or have no VESA mount at all.
  • Weight range: gas-spring arms only balance properly within their supported range. Use the monitor's weight without its stand, and choose an arm where your screen sits in the middle of the range.
  • Size: the maximum screen size also limits how far the arm can reach and rotate without screens touching each other.
  • Mount type: a desk clamp is the easiest; a grommet mount goes through a cable hole; wall mounts save the most space.

For two or more screens, dual and triple arms keep them aligned. Check the clamp range against your desk thickness, and reinforce thin or glass tops with a plate. Heavy ultrawide gaming monitors may need a heavy-duty arm. For sim racing, freestanding and rig-mounted stands from Next Level Racing, Sabelt and Asetek hold one to four screens in front of a cockpit; check that the stand fits your rig and screen sizes. Built-in cable channels keep display cables tidy.

Questions about monitor arms & mounts

How do I know if a monitor arm can hold my monitor?
Compare your monitor's weight without its stand, from the manufacturer's specifications, with the arm's supported weight range. Gas-spring arms work most smoothly when the monitor sits mid-range rather than at the limit.
Can I use an arm if my monitor has no VESA holes?
Some manufacturers sell VESA adapter brackets for specific models, and universal clamp-style adapters exist for screens without mounting holes. Check that the adapter is listed for your monitor and that the total weight stays within the arm's range.
Will a clamp damage my desk?
Clamps spread the load through a pad, but thin, soft or hollow desktops can still flex or dent under a heavy, extended arm. Use a reinforcement plate on thin tops, and never clamp directly to glass.
