Buying ssd & drive coolers at HodlChip

NVMe SSDs slow down when their controller gets too hot, and fast PCIe 5.0 drives need cooling the most. Choose by space and heat:

  • Low-profile heatsinks, from about 3 to 10 mm tall, suit drives under a graphics card or in tight spaces.
  • Heatpipe and finned coolers handle PCIe 5.0 drives under sustained load, but need room above the slot.
  • Active coolers with a small fan add the most cooling, at the cost of a little noise and a power cable.
  • PS5 heatsinks fit the console's expansion bay and stay within Sony's size limits.

Most coolers fit the common 2280 length. Before you buy, check three things: whether your motherboard already has an M.2 heatsink (use one or the other, not both), the clearance to the graphics card, and whether the SSD has chips on both sides, which needs a thermal pad underneath as well. Use the pads supplied with the cooler, as their thickness matters for contact. Find drives in NVMe SSDs, and M.2 adapter cards with heatsinks in expansion cards.

Questions about ssd & drive coolers

Does my SSD need a heatsink?
PCIe 5.0 drives do: they throttle under sustained load without cooling. PCIe 4.0 drives benefit from the motherboard's M.2 heatsink or a simple passive one, and PCIe 3.0 drives rarely need more than good case airflow.
Can I use an SSD heatsink together with my motherboard's M.2 cover?
No, use one or the other. Remove the motherboard cover if you fit an aftermarket heatsink, or keep the board's cover if it fits better under your graphics card. Never stack two heatsinks on one drive.
Which heatsink fits a PS5?
One designed for the PS5 expansion bay, or any heatsink that keeps the drive and cooler within Sony's size limits: 11.25 mm in total height, with no more than 8 mm above the circuit board. Check the dimensions on the product page.
