Buying network cards & adapters at HodlChip

Upgrade or add a network connection to a desktop, laptop or NAS:

  • Wired PCIe cards: 2.5GbE suits most desktops with a multi-gig router or switch; 10GbE (10GBASE-T) suits workstations and NAS units that move large files. Check the card's lane width, x1 or x4, and PCIe generation against a free slot.
  • Wi-Fi cards and M.2 modules: PCIe cards with external antennas add Wi-Fi 6, 6E or 7 and Bluetooth to a desktop; M.2 modules replace the built-in card of a laptop or motherboard. Intel CNVi modules only work on platforms that support CNVi.
  • USB Ethernet adapters: add a Gigabit or 2.5GbE port to laptops and handhelds through USB-A or USB-C.

Check driver support for your operating system, especially for Linux-based NAS systems; some cards are made for one NAS brand only. For 10GBASE-T over copper, use Cat6A cable for runs up to 100 m, and give hot-running cards some airflow. The switch or router at the other end must support the same speed. For more Wi-Fi options, see Wi-Fi & Bluetooth adapters; for more ports, see switches & KVM.

Questions about network cards & adapters

Will a 2.5GbE card speed up my internet?
Only if your internet plan and your router or switch are faster than 1 Gb/s. Inside the home, it speeds up transfers to a NAS or another PC that also has a multi-gig connection.
Will a 10GbE card work in a PCIe x1 slot?
It may fit an open-ended slot, but depending on the PCIe generation a single lane may not carry full 10GbE bandwidth. Use the lane width the card specifies, typically x4.
Do I need special cables for 10GbE?
For 10GBASE-T over RJ45, use Cat6A for runs up to 100 m; Cat6 works over shorter distances, up to about 55 m. 2.5GbE runs over Cat5e.
