Buying usb flash drives at HodlChip

A USB flash drive is still the simplest way to carry files, install an operating system or update a BIOS. What to check:

  • Capacity: a Windows installer needs at least 8 GB, so any drive here works; 64 to 256 GB suits photos, videos and portable apps.
  • Speed: USB 3.2 drives are much faster than USB 2.0 models, especially with large files, but only in a USB 3 port. Read speeds are usually higher than write speeds.
  • Connector: these drives use USB-A. For a laptop with USB-C ports only, add a small adapter or a USB-C hub.

For BIOS updates, many motherboards need a drive formatted as FAT32, while the Windows media creation tool formats the drive for you. Use exFAT for files over 4 GB that you share between Windows and macOS. Flash drives are handy but easy to lose, so encrypt sensitive files and keep important data backed up elsewhere.

For larger and faster portable storage, see external drives; to read camera cards, see card readers.

Questions about usb flash drives

Which flash drive do I need for a Windows installer?
Any drive of 8 GB or more works with Microsoft's media creation tool, which erases the drive first. A USB 3 drive in a USB 3 port shortens the installation.
Why can I not copy a file larger than 4 GB to my flash drive?
The drive is formatted as FAT32, which limits single files to 4 GB. Copy off anything you want to keep, then reformat the drive as exFAT, which works on both Windows and macOS.
Will a USB-A flash drive work with a USB-C laptop?
Yes, with a USB-C to USB-A adapter or a USB-C hub. The drive then runs at the speed of the slowest part of the chain.
