Buying chargers & power banks at HodlChip

One good USB-C charger can power a laptop, phone, tablet and handheld. What to check:

  • Wattage: match or exceed your device's maximum charging power. Phones charge at about 20 to 45 W, thin laptops at 45 to 100 W, and larger laptops at up to 140 W over USB Power Delivery 3.1.
  • Power sharing: on multi-port chargers the total output is split between ports, so check what a single port delivers when several devices are connected.
  • Cables: charging above 60 W needs a 5 A e-marked USB-C cable, and above 100 W a cable rated for 240 W.
  • Power banks: capacity in mAh sets how many charges you get; output in watts sets whether it can charge a laptop. Qi2 magnetic models snap onto compatible phones.

GaN (gallium nitride) chargers are smaller and run cooler than older designs of the same wattage. For flights, airlines generally allow power banks up to 100 Wh in carry-on luggage only; check the rating on the product page and your airline's rules. Use the Type filter to switch between chargers and power banks. At a desk, a USB-C hub with Power Delivery pass-through keeps a single cable to the laptop.

Questions about chargers & power banks

Can I charge my laptop with a USB-C charger?
Yes, if the laptop charges over USB-C. Any USB Power Delivery charger works, but one with less than the original wattage charges slowly or cannot keep up under load. Gaming laptops often need their own barrel charger for full performance.
Is a higher-wattage charger safe for my phone?
Yes. USB Power Delivery negotiates the power each device asks for, so a 100 W charger charges a phone at the phone's own maximum, not at 100 W.
Can I take a power bank on a plane?
Generally in carry-on luggage only, never in checked bags. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100 Wh without approval, and larger ones need the airline's permission. The rating is on the product page and on the power bank itself.
