Buying controllers & gamepads at HodlChip
Check platform support first: a controller made for one console may not work wirelessly on another. On PC, most current controllers work as standard XInput devices or through Steam Input.
- Connection: a 2.4 GHz dongle gives low latency on PC; Bluetooth is convenient for handhelds, phones and tablets; a cable avoids charging and adds no wireless delay.
- Hall-effect sticks: magnetic sensors instead of contact potentiometers, which makes them resistant to stick drift. Hall-effect triggers can also offer adjustable trigger stops.
- Back buttons and profiles: paddles let you jump or reload without taking your thumbs off the sticks, and onboard profiles store mappings per game.
- Polling rate: higher polling rates on PC can make fast games feel more responsive.
Check the battery type (built-in rechargeable or AA), the cable connector and whether a charging dock is included. Offset (Xbox-style) and symmetric (PlayStation-style) stick layouts feel different, so choose the one you are used to. Racing fans should look at wheel bases, pilots at flight sim controls, and Switch players at handheld consoles.
