Buying flight sim controls at HodlChip

Start with the aircraft you fly most:

  • Airliners and light aircraft: a yoke and throttle quadrant for Boeing-style cockpits and general aviation, or an Airbus-style sidestick with a quadrant.
  • Combat and space sims: a HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) puts the controls you need on the stick and throttle; dual-stick setups suit space games.
  • Force feedback bases: motorized bases push back on the stick or yoke, simulating trim and aerodynamic loads, and take interchangeable grips.
  • Rudder pedals: for coordinated turns, taxiing and toe brakes.

Sensors: Hall-effect (magnetic) sensors do not wear like potentiometers, and higher resolution gives finer control. Modular systems from VIRPIL and MOZA let you mix bases, grips and throttles and upgrade one part at a time. Most flight controls are made for PC; Xbox-compatible models are marked, so use the Platform filter. Clamp heavy bases to a solid desk or mount them on a cockpit, and add a VR headset to look around the cockpit naturally.

Questions about flight sim controls

Do I need a HOTAS or a yoke?
Choose by aircraft: a yoke suits airliners and light aircraft with control wheels, a sidestick suits Airbus types, and a HOTAS suits combat and space sims. Many pilots add rudder pedals to any of them.
Will flight sim controls work on Xbox?
Only models made for Xbox, which are marked on the product page and in the Platform filter. Most sticks, throttles and pedals work on PC only, where flight sims recognize them as standard USB controllers.
What is a force feedback flight base?
A motorized base that pushes back on the stick or yoke, simulating trim, aerodynamic loads and stall buffeting. It needs a sturdy mount, its own power supply and a sim that supports force feedback.
