Buying memory at HodlChip
Buy memory as a matched kit rather than single modules, and match the type to your platform: AM5 and Intel LGA 1851 boards take DDR5 only, AM4 boards take DDR4, and LGA 1700 boards come in either version.
- Capacity: 32 GB (2 × 16 GB) suits gaming and everyday work; 64 GB or more helps with video editing, virtual machines and local AI.
- Speed: DDR5-6000 with low latency (CL30 to CL36) is a common target for Ryzen 7000 and 9000. Intel Core Ultra 200S can use faster kits, including CUDIMM modules.
- Two modules over four: four DDR5 modules often have to run at lower speeds, so a 2 × 32 GB kit is a better choice than 4 × 16 GB.
Enable the EXPO (AMD) or XMP (Intel) profile in the BIOS, or the kit runs at its slower default speed. Laptops and many mini PCs use SO-DIMM modules; servers and workstations often use registered ECC memory, which does not work in consumer desktop boards.
