Buying pedals at HodlChip

Pedals decide how consistently you brake, and braking is where much of your lap time is won or lost. Compare the brake sensor first:

  • Position sensors (potentiometer or Hall): measure how far the pedal travels. Hall sensors are contactless and do not wear.
  • Load cell: measures how hard you press, like a real brake. Muscle memory builds on pressure, which makes braking more repeatable.
  • Hydraulic: adds a damped, realistic feel through a hydraulic cylinder, for experienced racers.
  • Pneumatic and active: air cylinders or motors create the pedal force, which can be tuned in detail; active pedals can also add effects such as ABS pulses.

Two or three pedals: two pedals (throttle and brake) cover modern race cars with paddle shifters; add a clutch for road cars, H-pattern gearboxes and rally. Adjustability: elastomers, springs and pedal plate positions let you tune feel and spacing, and load cell brakes let you set the maximum force.

A load cell brake needs a solid mount: with a chair at a desk, the chair slides back under heavy braking, so use a cockpit or a wheel stand with a pedal plate. Pedals connect by USB on PC, or through the wheel base, which consoles usually require.

Questions about pedals

Are load cell pedals worth it?
For most sim racers, yes: braking by pressure instead of travel feels more natural and is easier to repeat, which makes it a popular first upgrade. Make sure your rig can handle the force.
Do I need a clutch pedal?
Only for cars with an H-pattern gearbox, or for rally and road driving with a manual clutch. Most modern race cars use paddle shifters, so a two-pedal set covers them.
Can I use sim racing pedals on a console?
Usually through a licensed wheel base: the pedals connect to the base, which handles console compatibility. Pedals connected only by USB generally work on PC alone.
