Buying pumps, reservoirs & distro plates at HodlChip
The pump moves coolant through every block and radiator; the reservoir makes filling and bleeding the loop easier. Choose the pump type first:
- D5: larger, high flow and quiet, the common choice for most loops.
- DDC: compact with high pressure, good for restrictive loops and small cases. It runs hotter, so a housing or heatsink that cools it helps.
Then pick a format: a pump-reservoir combo is the simplest to plumb; a separate reservoir gives more layout freedom; a distribution plate is made for one specific case and replaces much of the tubing with channels in a panel.
Mount the reservoir above or beside the pump inlet so coolant feeds the pump by gravity, and never run a pump dry, even briefly. Use a power supply jumper or a filling tool to run only the pump while you fill and leak-test. PWM-controlled pumps can run slower and quieter once the loop is free of air. Should I choose a D5 or a DDC pump?
D5 pumps offer high flow and quiet running and suit most loops if you have the space. DDC pumps are smaller and build more pressure, which helps in compact or restrictive loops, but they run hotter and benefit from a cooling housing.
Do I need a reservoir?
Almost every loop uses one. It makes filling and removing air much easier and shows the coolant level. Compact options include pump-reservoir combos and case-specific distribution plates.
How do I fill a loop without running the pump dry?
Fill the reservoir first, then run the pump in short bursts with a PSU jumper or filling tool while you keep topping up, so it never draws air. Tilt the case gently to free trapped bubbles before running it continuously.
