Buying radiators at HodlChip

Radiator area decides how much heat your loop can shed at a given fan speed. Three things to compare:

  • Size: named after the fans it takes: 120, 240, 360 and 480 mm for 120 mm fans; 140, 280, 420 and 560 mm for 140 mm fans. Check your case's radiator support at each position; external radiators such as the MO-RA sit outside the case and take many large fans.
  • Thickness: slim radiators, around 30 mm, fit tight cases; 45 to 60 mm models add capacity but need space for the fans as well.
  • Fin density: dense fins suit higher fan speeds; lower density works better with quiet, slow fans.

As a rule of thumb, plan one 120 mm section per component plus one extra, and more for a high-wattage graphics card or very quiet running. Copper and brass radiators can share a loop with copper and nickel-plated blocks; never add aluminum parts.

Flush a new radiator with warm distilled water before installation to remove residue from manufacturing. Pair it with static-pressure case fans, and complete the loop with fittings, tubing and a pump and reservoir.

Questions about radiators

How thick should my radiator be?
Use the thickest radiator your case allows at that position, minding motherboard, memory and fan clearance. Slim radiators around 30 mm fit most cases; 45 to 60 mm models add cooling capacity, especially with slow, quiet fans.
Do I need to clean a new radiator?
Flushing is recommended. Rinse it with warm distilled water and shake it to remove flux and particles left from manufacturing, until the water runs clear. Some builders also use a dedicated radiator cleaning solution.
What is the difference between a 360 mm and a 420 mm radiator?
A 360 mm radiator takes three 120 mm fans and a 420 mm radiator takes three 140 mm fans. The 420 mm version has more surface area, but needs a case with 140 mm mounts and more length.
