Buying rgb lighting at HodlChip
Before buying any lighting, check which connector it uses. The two standards are not interchangeable:
- ARGB (addressable): 3-pin, 5 V. Each LED can show its own color, for rainbow and wave effects.
- RGB: 4-pin, 12 V. The whole strip shows one color at a time.
Plugging a 5 V ARGB device into a 12 V RGB header can permanently damage its LEDs, so read the header labels in your motherboard manual. Some brands also use their own connectors and controllers.
Then decide how to control it:
- Motherboard sync: connect to the ARGB headers and control everything from one app.
- Standalone controller or hub: adds outputs, runs effects without software, or ties together lights from several brands.
- Brand ecosystems: fans, strips and coolers from one maker share a controller and app, with the most effects but less flexibility.
Strips with magnetic or adhesive backing mount along panels or under a desk; diffused strips hide individual LED dots. For lit fans, see case fans, and for combined fan and lighting hubs, see fan & RGB controllers.
