Buying sata ssds at HodlChip
SATA SSDs top out around 550 MB/s, the limit of the SATA III interface. That is slower than NVMe but still far quicker than a hard drive in everyday use. They make sense when you are:
- Upgrading an older PC or laptop that has a 2.5-inch bay but no M.2 slot: replacing a hard drive with a SATA SSD is a noticeable upgrade.
- Adding storage when all M.2 slots are in use, or when filling M.2 slots would disable SATA ports or lanes you need.
- Building a NAS or home server with SSD storage or cache in 2.5-inch bays.
Check the form factor: most SATA SSDs are 2.5-inch and 7 mm thick, which fits laptops and desktop bays (some desktops need a 3.5-inch adapter bracket). M.2 SATA drives look like NVMe drives but only work in M.2 slots that support SATA, so check your manual.
In a desktop you need a SATA data cable, often included with the motherboard, and a SATA power connector from the PSU. To move your system to the new drive, use a cloning tool, then extend the partition if the drive is larger. If your PC has a free M.2 slot, an NVMe SSD is usually the faster choice, often at a similar price.
