Buying wheel bases at HodlChip

The wheel base turns the game's physics into force feedback through the rim. Three things to compare:

  • Direct drive: the wheel connects straight to the motor shaft, with no belts or gears in between, for detailed, responsive feedback. Motor size and encoder resolution shape how much fine detail comes through.
  • Torque: 5 to 8 Nm is plenty to learn on and works on a sturdy desk; 9 to 15 Nm covers most enthusiasts; higher torque adds headroom for strong cars and fine detail but needs a rigid cockpit. You will rarely run a strong base at 100 percent.
  • Platform: check PC, PlayStation and Xbox support. Console use needs a licensed base, and wheels and pedals often connect through it.

Consider the ecosystem: the quick release, compatible wheels and pedals, and the driver software for tuning. High-torque direct drive bases can hurt wrists and thumbs in a crash, so set sensible torque limits and keep your thumbs outside the rim. Mount the base on a rig or cockpit that does not flex. Our sim racing setup guide explains torque and mounting in more detail.

Questions about wheel bases

How much torque do I need?
Around 5 to 8 Nm is plenty to start and works on a sturdy desk. Most enthusiasts are well served by 9 to 15 Nm on a rigid rig; higher torque mainly adds headroom and detail at lower strength settings.
Do I need a separate quick release?
Each brand uses its own quick release, so wheels and bases from the same brand fit directly. To fit a wheel from another brand, add a quick release or adapter made for that pairing from sim racing accessories, and check which buttons and displays still work.
Can I use wheels from another brand on my base?
Sometimes. Each brand uses its own quick release and electronics, so wheels from another brand may need an adapter and can lose buttons or displays. Staying within one ecosystem is the simplest route.
