Buying display & multimedia cables at HodlChip

A display cable either carries the signal cleanly or causes flicker, dropouts or a lower refresh rate. Choose by the bandwidth your monitor needs:

  • DisplayPort 2.1: look for VESA-certified DP40, DP54 or DP80 cables. DP80 carries the full UHBR20 bandwidth for 4K at very high refresh rates, on graphics cards that support it.
  • DisplayPort 1.4: handles 1440p at high refresh rates, and 4K at 144 Hz or more with Display Stream Compression (DSC).
  • HDMI 2.1: use an Ultra High Speed HDMI certified cable for 4K at 120 Hz and above on consoles, TVs and recent monitors.

Length matters: the higher the bandwidth, the shorter a passive cable can be. For long runs, choose active or optical (fiber) cables rated for the full bandwidth; optical cables are directional, so plug the marked ends into the source and the display.

The cable supplied with your monitor is a safe choice if it reaches. Check the outputs on your graphics card too, as many have more DisplayPort outputs than HDMI. For laptops, USB-C to HDMI adapters work when the USB-C port supports video output, a USB-C hub adds more ports, and a monitor arm with cable channels keeps everything tidy. The gaming monitor guide lists the connection each refresh rate needs.

Questions about display & multimedia cables

Which cable do I need for 4K at 240 Hz?
Use the connection the monitor specifies for that mode: DisplayPort 2.1 with a DP80 cable if both the graphics card and the monitor support UHBR20, otherwise DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, or HDMI 2.1 with an Ultra High Speed certified cable. The monitor manual lists the modes each port supports.
How long can a DisplayPort or HDMI cable be?
It depends on bandwidth: high-bandwidth signals allow only short passive cables, often 1 to 2 meters for the fastest DisplayPort modes. For longer distances, use an active or optical cable rated for the bandwidth you need.
Does an HDMI 2.1 cable work with older devices?
Yes. HDMI cables are backward compatible, so an Ultra High Speed cable works with HDMI 2.0 and older devices at their own maximum.
