Buying gaming laptops at HodlChip

The graphics chip matters most, but in a laptop the GPU name is only half the story:

  • GPU and power limit: each manufacturer sets its own power limit (TGP) for the same GPU, and a higher limit with good cooling gives more performance. Check the TGP in the specifications.
  • Screen: 16-inch models balance size and weight; 18-inch models suit desk use. A 1440p-class panel at 165–240 Hz is a good match for an RTX 5070 Ti and above.
  • MUX switch or Advanced Optimus: lets the dedicated GPU drive the screen directly for higher frame rates.
  • Memory and storage: 32 GB of RAM and a 1–2 TB SSD give room to grow; check whether either can be upgraded later.

Gaming laptops are heavier and louder under load than thin-and-light models, and battery life while gaming is short, so plan to play plugged in. If you mostly game at one desk, a desktop built from PC components gives more performance for the money; at home, a laptop stand or USB-C hub and a gaming monitor turn the laptop into a desk setup. Our graphics card guide explains the RTX 50 tiers.

Questions about gaming laptops

Is a laptop RTX 5080 as fast as the desktop RTX 5080?
No. Laptop GPUs share names with desktop cards but use different configurations and much lower power, so expect lower performance. Between laptops, the configured power limit (TGP) and the cooling make a noticeable difference.
What is a MUX switch?
A MUX switch lets the dedicated graphics card send frames straight to the laptop screen instead of through the integrated GPU, which can raise frame rates. Advanced Optimus switches automatically; a manual MUX usually needs a restart.
Can I upgrade the RAM and SSD later?
Often, but not always. Many gaming laptops use SO-DIMM memory slots and have a spare M.2 slot, while thinner models solder the memory. Check the manufacturer's specifications before you count on an upgrade.
