Buying monitor accessories at HodlChip

The right accessories make a good monitor comfortable to use and let it reach its full refresh rate:

  • Monitor arms and mounts: free up desk space and put the screen at the right height and distance. Check the VESA pattern, the weight range and your desk's thickness for the clamp.
  • DisplayPort and HDMI cables: match the cable to the bandwidth your resolution and refresh rate need. High resolutions at high refresh rates call for DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.1, with a certified cable.

For comfortable ergonomics, place the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away and tilted slightly back. An arm makes those adjustments easy and lets you swing the screen aside when you need the desk. Ultrawides and large OLED screens can be heavy, so check the monitor's weight without its stand against the arm's supported range.

For several screens, dual and triple arms keep them aligned. On laptop desks, a USB-C hub with HDMI connects a monitor through the same cable as your other devices, and our gaming monitor guide explains which connection each refresh rate needs.

Questions about monitor accessories

Will a monitor arm fit my monitor?
Check three things: the monitor has VESA mounting holes (usually 75 × 75 or 100 × 100 mm), its weight without the stand is within the arm's range, and its size is within the arm's maximum. Curved and ultrawide screens may need a heavy-duty arm.
Do expensive HDMI or DisplayPort cables give a better picture?
A digital cable either carries the signal reliably or it does not, so price alone makes no difference. What matters is certification for the bandwidth you need, such as Ultra High Speed HDMI or DP40, DP54 and DP80 DisplayPort cables, and a length within the certified limits.
Can my desk hold a monitor arm?
Most arms clamp to desks up to a certain thickness or mount through a grommet hole; check the range in the specifications. Glass desks and thin or hollow tops may need a reinforcement plate.
