The power supply feeds every other part, so choose it with care:
- Wattage: follow the recommended PSU size for your graphics card. NVIDIA, for example, lists 1,000 W for an RTX 5090 system and 850 W for an RTX 5080. Headroom keeps the fan quieter and leaves room for upgrades.
- ATX 3.1 and 12V-2x6: the current standards are built for the short power spikes of modern GPUs and include a native cable for cards with a 12V-2x6 connector.
- Efficiency: 80 PLUS Gold is the usual balance of price and efficiency; Platinum and Titanium waste less power as heat, which matters for systems that run all day.
- Cabling and size: fully modular units make tidy builds easier. Small form factor cases need SFX or SFX-L, so check the PSU form factor your case supports.
Never reuse modular cables from another power supply: pinouts differ between brands and even between series, and the wrong cable can destroy components. The PSU sizing guide walks through the math, and cables and adapters cover the rest.
