Shifters and handbrakes add the controls that paddle shifters cannot replace in rally, drift, trucks and classic cars:

  • H-pattern shifters: for road cars and classics with a manual gearbox. Pair them with a clutch pedal for the full experience.
  • Sequential shifters: push forward or pull back to change gear, as in rally and touring cars. Many units switch between H-pattern and sequential modes.
  • Handbrakes: analog handbrakes with Hall or load cell sensors give progressive control for drifting and hairpins, and some double as a sequential shifter.

Check how they connect: USB devices work on PC as separate controllers, while console play usually requires a shifter that connects through a licensed wheel base. Do sim racing shifters work on consoles?
Mostly through a compatible wheel base: the shifter plugs into the base, which handles the console connection. Shifters that only connect by USB generally work on PC.
Do I need a clutch pedal for an H-pattern shifter?
It is not required, as many games offer an automatic clutch, but a clutch pedal makes H-pattern driving realistic. A three-pedal set completes the experience.
Where should I mount a handbrake?
Beside the seat at a comfortable hand height, on a rigid mount such as an aluminum profile rig or a sturdy clamp. Loose mounts move under force and make the input inconsistent.
