Buying storage at HodlChip

Match the storage type to the job:

Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. RAID protects against a drive failure, not against deletion, ransomware or theft, so keep a separate backup. Our NVMe SSD guide helps you choose a boot drive.

Questions about storage

Which SSD should I buy for gaming?
A 1 or 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD suits almost every gaming PC. PCIe 5.0 drives are much faster in large file transfers, but game load times differ little between the two in most current games.
Is RAID a backup?
No. RAID keeps your data available if a drive fails, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, theft or fire. Keep at least one more copy on a separate drive, ideally off-site.
Should I use an SSD or a hard drive for backups?
Hard drives cost far less per terabyte and suit large backups and archives. SSDs are faster, quieter and more resistant to knocks, which suits portable backups and frequently used files.
