Buying nvme ssds at HodlChip

Pick an NVMe SSD by slot, speed tier and capacity:

  • PCIe 5.0: sequential reads above 10 GB/s on the fastest models, useful for large video projects and data work. It needs a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and good cooling.
  • PCIe 4.0: up to about 7 GB/s, the right choice for most gaming PCs and for the PS5.
  • PCIe 3.0: for older systems, and still far faster than SATA.

Capacity: 2 TB is a comfortable size for a gaming or work PC in 2026, since many games exceed 100 GB. Larger drives also tend to be faster and carry higher endurance ratings. Endurance (TBW, terabytes written) matters for heavy writing such as video capture; typical home use stays far below it.

Cache and NAND: drives with DRAM or a good host memory buffer (HMB) keep speeds steady, and TLC NAND sustains writes and endurance better than QLC under heavy use.

Use the motherboard's M.2 heatsink, a drive with its own heatsink or an SSD cooler, especially for PCIe 5.0. For a PS5, choose a PCIe 4.0 drive with a heatsink that fits Sony's size limits. Our NVMe SSD guide covers the details.

Questions about nvme ssds

Is a PCIe 5.0 SSD worth it for gaming?
For most players, a PCIe 4.0 drive loads games almost as quickly. PCIe 5.0 drives make a difference in large file transfers, video editing and data work, and they need a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot to reach full speed.
Do I need an SSD heatsink?
For PCIe 5.0 drives, yes: they get hot under sustained load and slow down without cooling. PCIe 4.0 drives benefit from the motherboard's M.2 heatsink but rarely need one of their own. In laptops, use a thin drive without a heatsink.
Which SSD works in a PS5?
Sony recommends an M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or more, plus a heatsink or cooling structure that fits the expansion slot. Check the drive's total height with the heatsink before ordering.
