Buying air cooling at HodlChip

Air cooling is simple, reliable and quiet when it is sized well. A cooler, a few fans and fresh thermal compound are all it takes:

  • CPU air coolers: single-tower models suit most 6- and 8-core CPUs; dual-tower coolers handle hotter 12- to 24-core chips; low-profile coolers fit small form factor cases. Match the socket and your case's height limit.
  • Case fans: aim for slightly more air coming in at the front or bottom than leaving at the rear and top, so dust collects on the filters. 140 mm fans can move similar air to 120 mm fans at lower speed.
  • Thermal paste and pads: use fresh paste whenever you remount a cooler, and pads of the correct thickness for GPU memory or VRMs.
  • Extras: fan & RGB controllers, fan hubs and filters, mounting kits for new sockets and SSD coolers for hot NVMe drives.

Leave room for memory: tall RAM heat spreaders can clash with the front fan of a large cooler, so check the RAM clearance in the cooler specifications. If air is not enough for your CPU or case, compare AIO liquid coolers.

Can an air cooler handle a high-end CPU?
A large dual-tower cooler handles most desktop CPUs, including 16-core Ryzen 9 and 24-core Core Ultra 9 chips, though they may run warmer under long all-core loads. Compare the cooler's heat rating with your CPU, and consider a 360 mm AIO for sustained rendering.
Do AM4 coolers fit AM5, and LGA 1700 coolers fit LGA 1851?
In most cases, yes. AM5 keeps the AM4 mounting holes, so most AM4 coolers that use the stock backplate fit, and LGA 1851 uses the same cooler mounting as LGA 1700. Check the socket list on the product page to be sure.
How many case fans do I need?
Most cases work well with two or three intake fans at the front or bottom and one or two exhaust fans at the rear or top. Add fans where hot parts sit, such as under a large graphics card, rather than filling every mount.
