Buying tools & maintenance at HodlChip

A few good tools make every build and upgrade easier. What to keep on the bench:

  • Screwdrivers and bits: a precision set with Phillips, Torx and hex bits covers PCs, laptops and consoles, and magnetic tips help in tight spaces. Some coolers need a long screwdriver to reach their mounting screws.
  • Static protection: an antistatic mat and wrist strap reduce the risk of damaging parts while you work.
  • Screws and spares: case, fan and motherboard screw sets, which are easy to lose during a rebuild.
  • Cleaning: cordless electric blowers replace canned air for dust, wipes and cleaning liquid remove old thermal paste, and screen cleaners suit monitors and laptops.
  • Specialist tools: pin removers for cable work, a multimeter, calipers, and delidding and lapping tools for experienced overclockers.

When you blow dust out of a PC, hold the fans still so they do not spin past their rated speed. Delidding or lapping a CPU voids its warranty. Use the Type filter to find tools, cleaning materials or delidding kits. For thermal paste, see thermal paste & pads; for loop-specific tools, see loop tools & accessories.

Questions about tools & maintenance

Which screwdriver do I need to build a PC?
A Phillips PH2 handles most case, motherboard and power supply screws, with a smaller PH1 or PH0 for M.2 and small screws. A precision bit set adds Torx and hex bits for laptops, consoles and some coolers.
Is canned air or an electric blower better for cleaning?
An electric blower is reusable and gives steady airflow without the cold propellant that canned air can release when tilted. With either, hold the fans still while you clean so they are not spun past their rated speed.
Do I need an antistatic wrist strap?
It is a cheap safeguard. Touching bare metal on the case before handling parts also discharges static, but a strap or an antistatic mat keeps you grounded throughout the build.
