Buying water blocks at HodlChip

The water block is where heat enters your loop, so compatibility comes first:

  • CPU blocks fit by socket through mounting kits. AM5 and AM4 share hole spacing, as do LGA 1851 and LGA 1700; check which kits are included.
  • GPU blocks are made for specific circuit boards. A block for one partner card often will not fit another card with the same GPU, so match the exact model and, where listed, the PCB revision.
  • Active backplates circulate coolant behind the graphics card as well, cooling the back of the GPU and memory area.

Most blocks use nickel-plated or bare copper cold plates with acetal or acrylic tops. Nickel keeps its shine; bare copper darkens over time without losing performance. Standard blocks use G1/4" threads for fittings.

Fitting a GPU block means removing the stock cooler, which can affect the card's warranty, so check the manufacturer's terms first. Keep fresh thermal pads and paste of the right thickness at hand, and size your radiators for the combined heat of every block in the loop.

Questions about water blocks

Will a GPU water block fit my graphics card?
Only if it is listed for your exact card model. GPU blocks are made for specific circuit boards, and partner cards with the same GPU often use different layouts. Check the compatibility list on the product page and match the PCB revision where the manufacturer gives one.
Nickel-plated or bare copper: what is the difference?
They perform very similarly. Nickel plating keeps its shine and resists tarnish; bare copper darkens over time without losing performance. In either case, keep aluminum parts out of the loop.
Does fitting a water block void the warranty?
It depends on the card manufacturer. Some allow cooler removal as long as the card is undamaged; others do not. Check the terms before you start, and keep the original cooler, pads and screws.
