Buying networking at HodlChip

Build the network from the internet connection inward:

  • Routers: the heart of the network. Match the WAN port to your internet speed, and check that the router suits your connection, such as fiber, cable or DSL.
  • Wi-Fi & Bluetooth adapters: USB and PCIe Wi-Fi adapters and Bluetooth sticks for computers, plus mesh systems, repeaters and powerline kits that extend coverage.
  • Network cards & adapters: 2.5GbE and 10GbE cards, Wi-Fi cards and M.2 modules, and USB Ethernet adapters.
  • Switches & KVM: more wired ports for PCs, consoles and TVs, and KVM switches that share one screen, keyboard and mouse between two computers.

Wi-Fi 7 brings 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and Multi-Link Operation, but your devices must support it to benefit. Wired Ethernet remains the most stable option for gaming and large transfers. Put smart-home and guest devices on a separate network to keep your main computers isolated, and keep router firmware up to date.

Questions about networking

Do I need a Wi-Fi 7 router?
If you have Wi-Fi 7 phones or laptops, or an internet plan faster than 1 Gb/s, a Wi-Fi 7 router puts them to use. Older devices still connect at their own Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 5 speeds. 6 GHz availability depends on local regulations.
Do I need mesh Wi-Fi or a single router?
A single router covers most apartments and smaller homes. Larger homes, several floors or thick walls benefit from a mesh system, and connecting the mesh units by Ethernet gives the most consistent speeds.
What is a multi-gig network?
Ethernet faster than 1 Gb/s, usually 2.5GbE, 5GbE or 10GbE. It needs compatible ports on the router or switch and on the device, with Cat5e cabling or better for 2.5GbE and Cat6A for 10GbE over long runs.
