Buying motherboards at HodlChip

A motherboard has to match three things: your CPU's socket, your case's supported form factor and your memory type. After that, the chipset sets the features:

  • AMD AM5: X870E and X870 for the most PCIe 5.0 lanes and built-in USB4; B850 for most builds; A620 for simple, low-cost systems.
  • Intel LGA 1851: Z890 for CPU overclocking and the most connectivity; B860 for mainstream builds.
  • LGA 1700 and AM4: B760, Z790 and H610 boards for 12th to 14th Gen Core, and B550 boards for Ryzen 5000. LGA 1700 boards take DDR4 or DDR5, so check the Memory filter.

Then compare what you will actually use: the number of M.2 slots and which run at PCIe 5.0, rear USB ports, Wi-Fi 7, 2.5GbE or faster Ethernet, and memory slots. Mini-ITX boards save space but have two memory slots and fewer M.2 slots; ATX leaves room for expansion cards.

A newer CPU on an older board may need a BIOS update, and many boards can flash one from a USB stick without a CPU installed. Pick memory of the type the board takes, a case that fits the board size, and let the PC Builder confirm the rest.

Questions about motherboards

Which chipset should I choose for a Ryzen 9000 CPU?
B850 boards suit most builds and include PCIe 5.0 storage support. Choose X870 or X870E for more PCIe 5.0 lanes, USB4 and extra M.2 slots, or A620 to keep costs down on a simple system. Check the CPU support list on the product page for high-power chips.
What is the difference between ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX?
They are board sizes. ATX (305 × 244 mm) has the most slots and connectors, Micro-ATX (up to 244 × 244 mm) trims expansion slots, and Mini-ITX (170 × 170 mm) fits small form factor cases, with two memory slots and usually one PCIe slot. Your case must support the board size.
Do I need Wi-Fi on the motherboard?
Only if you cannot run an Ethernet cable. Boards with built-in Wi-Fi 7 usually add Bluetooth and come with antennas; otherwise you can add a Wi-Fi adapter later. The Wi-Fi filter shows which boards include it.
